Know More About the Top Deserts in Iran
The Dasht-e Kavir
Also known as Kavir-e Namak and the Great Salt Desert, Dasht-e Kavir is the largest salt desert on the central plateau of Iran. The desert is located southeast of the Alborz Mountains and stretches approximately 800 km (500 mi) long and 320 km (200 mi) wide, with a total surface area of about 77,600 km² (30,000 mi²).
There is almost no rain or snow in the area. However, runoff from the surrounding mountains provides enough water to create seasonal lakes. The temperature varies from 22°C (72°F) in January to as high as 70°C (130°F) in summer.
The only plants adapted to the hot and arid climate are shrubs, grasses on mountain tops, and mugwort, which is the most widespread plant.
A few animals also inhabit Dasht-e Kavir. Persian gazelles live in parts of the steppe and desert areas of the central plateau, while wild sheep, camels, goats, and Persian leopard are common in the mountainous regions.
Kavir-e Lut
Also known as Dasht-e Lut, this desert is situated in eastern Iran. It was the first natural site in Iran to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The surface of its sand has been measured at temperatures as high as 70°C (159°F), making it one of the driest and hottest places on Earth.
It extends about 320 km (200 mi) from northwest to southeast and is approximately 160 km (100 mi) wide, covering an area of 51,800 km² (20,000 mi²). The eastern part is a low plateau covered with salt flats, while the central part has been sculpted by the wind into a series of parallel ridges and furrows.
The Maranjab Desert in Isfahan
Isfahan is one of the most popular cities in Iran because of its historical sites. However, there are also many natural attractions around the city. The Maranjab Desert is located near Aran va Bidgol in Isfahan Province.
Visitors can enjoy Shah Abbasi Caravanserai and the Dastkan Pit. You will definitely enjoy walking on the golden sands or simply lying down and gazing at the crystal-clear desert sky.
Mesr Desert
This charming desert is located near the village of Mesr in Isfahan Province. Known as the “Sand Sea of the Desert,” it is one of Iran's most popular deserts. Activities in the Mesr Desert include cycling, camel riding, and desert hiking.
At night, you can admire the bright stars in the vast and beautiful sky. There are also suitable accommodations in nearby villages for overnight stays.
Kalut Shahdad Desert
Kerman is another excellent destination to visit in Iran during the fall and winter. It is home to many of the country’s natural attractions, including the remarkable Kalut Shahdad Desert.
These spectacular Kaluts, scientifically known as yardangs, are striking landforms created by water and wind erosion over more than 20,000 years in the heart of the Lut Desert.
