Trip Rating: Strenuous

Alamkouh, also spelled Alam Kuh, is the second-highest peak in Iran and is home to one of the five great technical big walls in the world. This impressive summit is located in the Takht-e Soleyman region in northern Iran. The region contains more than 400 peaks rising above 4,000 meters, making it an ideal destination for trekking, mountaineering, and rock climbing.

If you are interested in an easier route, you can climb the southern face via the Hesarchal Plateau, which is primarily a trekking route. Another option is the Alamchal Shelter and Siah Sang route, where you ascend beside cliffs; this is a mountaineering route suitable for those who enjoy moderate rock climbing. The German Flank is an excellent choice for experienced climbers, with a maximum rock climbing grade of 5.9b. Professional climbers can choose from several famous routes, including the Harayrud, French, Polish, Italian, and Arash routes. This magnificent 450-meter granite wall is ready to challenge you.

We will wake up at 5:00 AM. After breakfast, we pack our personal belongings, lunch boxes, and beverages, and drive to Vandarbon, the starting point for our trek toward the Alamchal area. From Vandarbon, we continue to Barir, where the trekking begins.

The hike to Sarchal Shelter (3,950 m) takes approximately four hours. This area is often covered in mist, but on clear days, you can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The trail passes through alpine vegetation and moderate slopes.

After lunch and a short rest, we take a light acclimatization hike of about two hours. Overnight at Sarchal Shelter. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (B, L, D).

Today, we wake up at Sarchal Shelter, surrounded by peaks higher than 4,000 meters. After breakfast with hot tea and coffee, we begin our summit attempt carrying only essential items and a lunch box.

The Alamchal area is a glacial region and the base for both big wall climbing and the German Flank route. From Alamchal, we ascend a steep path through the Siah Sang cliffs. After approximately four hours, we reach a small steel hut, where we rest briefly.

We then continue for another two hours to reach the summit of Alamkouh. The upper section consists of loose rocks, and occasional rockfall can occur on the northern face. After enjoying the summit views, we descend along the same route, taking special care while crossing the Siah Sang Pass. The descent to Sarchal Shelter takes approximately three hours. Overnight at the shelter. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (B, L, D).
